Shippen Manor Lawn Concert - Kinderhook

Sunday, July 16, 2017 -
6:00pm to 8:00pm

Relax on a the lawn at Shippen Manor for a performance by Kinderhook, a six-piece, high-energy country rock band.

The group started in the early 1970's as an acoustic trio comprised of students who met at Rutgers University and quickly evolved into the six-piece group. Seemingly overnight, the band went from playing for drinks and tips at a local college taco joint to sharing the stage with Poco before an enthusiastic crowd of 25,000 at the Schaeffer Music Festival in New York’s Central Park. By the mid '70s, Kinderhook’s loyal following grew to such a point that they were able to pioneer country rock in major rock clubs such as the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. Excellent reviews from the New York Times, Variety, and Billboard helped catapult Kinderhook into one of the top drawing acts in the New York Metropolitan area. They played venues including The Palladium and the Other End in NYC, the Capitol Theater in NJ, The New England Folk Festival and colleges from Boston to Washington, DC.

The list of acts they have appeared with reads like a who’s who of country rock, including Poco, the Dirt Band, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, and Commander Cody. Kinderhook briefly re-united for a charity event in 1999 and in 2010 was asked to once again open for the New Riders. The success of that show and the enthusiastic response to their appearance at the Stone Pony’s “Light of Day” show in 2011 helped cement the band’s decision to move forward in 2012.

Today the lineup includes original members Jerry Kopychuk, guitar and banjo; Andy Fediw, bass guitar; Craig Barry, drums; and John Korba on keyboards and guitar. In 2011, they added longtime Cowtown member Jimmy Ryan on pedal steel and guitar. In 2013, they added Jim Messina’s violinist and guitarist Gary Oleyar. All the members are lead singers, giving the band its distinctive vocal presence. A Kinderhook show contains a unique blend of original music mixed in with their own takes on classic cover songs. Kinderhook is back, stronger than ever, infectiously enjoying themselves and drawing excited crowds to venues such as the Stone Pony, the Stanhope House, Roxy and Dukes and festivals throughout the Northeast. There is also a new CD in the making!
