National POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony

Friday, September 20, 2019 - 6:00pm

The veterans of The American Legion, Carl D. Archer Post 528 of White Township will be holding a Recognition Day ceremony at the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action memorial, located at the Oscar Unangst Memorial Fields.

We cordially invite all community residents, Boy Scout Troop 146, and our local, county and state elected officials to attend to show your appreciation and gratitude for those men and women who have fought and were imprisoned as POWs.

The Oscar Unangst Memorial Fields are located on County Route 519, across from Flowerland, in White Township.  This will be the third ceremony held since the dedication of the memorial.

A brief ceremony will be held honoring three Korean War veterans:
• Army Sergeant Frank Suliman from New Brunswick, NJ
• Army Private First Class Richard A. Lucas from Monmouth, NJ
• Army Corporal John. W. Lutz from Kearny, NJ
As well as recognizing a local POW, the history of the POW/MIA flag, POW/MIA empty chair and the Missing Man table and Honors ceremony.

Sgt. Suliman's remains were repatriated this year, while PFC Lucas returned in 2017 and Cpl. Lutz in 2011.

Participating in the ceremony will be members from Boy Scout Troop 146, local, county and state elected officials, and members of Post 528. Joe Federico, former WWII POW and Post 528 member, will lay the wreath at the memorial.

We will be holding the ceremony outside so please bring a chair, as program will run about 30-40 minutes.

We look forward to seeing you on the 20th of September as we honor those heroic men who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country and families.
