Historian of Rutherfurd Hall, Joan Leckie Salvas, explores one of the most poignant chapters in American history with the final days of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his enduring connection to Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd. Through meticulous research and vivid storytelling, Salvas will bring to life the emotional and historical weight of those last moments.

Titled “The Long Goodbye,” this engaging talk will delve into the intimate and complex relationship between FDR and Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd, the woman who held a significant place in his heart and later became a quiet presence in his final years. Their story, shaped by war, politics, and personal sacrifice, culminated in a final meeting at Warm Springs, Georgia, where Lucy was by FDR’s side in his final moments on April 12, 1945.
