The Arts at St. Luke’s Announces New Season

The Arts at St. Luke’s is back from another season of free and great music. Concerts take place at St. Luke’s Church in Hope beginning on Saturday, May 30 and continues through October.

Sam Edelston, a first timer to the St. Luke’s lineup, is a mountain dulcimer virtuoso who actively promotes his instrument as a featured part of rock and pop music. Edleston started as a guitar and hammer dulcimer player, and now plays music from bluegrass to bossa nova, Sousa to Gilbert and Sullivan and Tin Pan Alley. He takes the stage May 30 from 7-9pm.

An annual favorite to these concerts is an appearance by Jesse Bardwell and the Noble Brothers on Saturday, June 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. Together since they were young teenagers in the Quimby Mountain Band, the group is now a local legend, playing classic rock, bluegrass, country and their own music in venues all over the area.

Lead singer Jesse Bardwell, guitar player Harry Noble and upright bass player Bob Noble along with their percussionist and occasional keyboard player are one of the premier acts of Northwest New Jersey.

After a hot weather hiatus, the series resumes on Sunday, October 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. with the music of Charlie Zahn, a famous performer of Celtic, maritime and traditional American music.

This is the first time Zahn has played in the historic church, having played in nearby Morris County as well as up and down the East Coast. Along with backup performers, the Canadian Zahn is one of the few performers invited to sing live with Scotland’s Black Watch Regiment Pipes and Drums.

Sunday, October 18 welcomes Jan Findlay back for her annual visit from 2 to 4 p.m. with pianist Tomoko Ohno and other musicians. Findlay is a noted local jazz singer who frequently plays Madison’s Shanghai Jazz. Jan and her husband, known as Jan and Bob, have also sang folk music in Morris County.

The Arts at St. Luke’s will showcase local talent in November and host the Warren County Community Singers along with other musician to sing carols during Hope Moravian Lantern tour the second Saturday in December.

The concerts are made possible by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts through the Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission.
