Campgrounds Reopen
Private campgrounds are once again permitted to be open, so if you're craving some social distancing in the woods, check out three located in Warren County: Camp Taylor Campground, Delaware River Family Campground (pictured), and TripleBrook RV & Camping Resort.
There are restrictions and not all facilities are open, but Camp Taylor reports their main bathhouses are open, and while the game room and playground are closed, there are still miles of hiking trails for overnight campers. Hunt for "fairy stones" around the camp, and there are coloriing pages and a walk in the woods check sheet for kids. TripleBrook is open for both seasonal campers and transient guests with their own self-contained campers. While their bathhouses and many amenities remain closed, you can get outside to enjoy some fresh air and open space. Many of their standard holiday activities have modified them to make them work in the current environment; for example, they are offering arts & crafts in a box – picked up and done on the camper’s site, ice cream truck – taking their ice cream cooler out through the park, and having a drive-in movie with a large 12-foot pop-up screen for cars only to allow for social distancing. Delaware River Family Campground is open for seasonal and transient campers and taking reservations.
Select Restrooms Re-Open in New Jersey’s State Parks and Forests
Here's some welcome news! Not only are state parks and forests open again, but the State Park Service is phasing in the reopening of restrooms. Please be patient with park staff as there are new cleaning protocols in place. Before entering an open restroom, mask up! It's to protect both you and others. The restrooms are open from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Jenny Jump State Forest (Notch Parking Lot); Kittatinny Valley State Park (Lake Aeroflex Parking Lot); Waterloo Village Historic Site (Comfort Station); and Worthington State Forest (Park Office). Restrooms are NOT available at Stephens State Park. The full list of parks and forests with open restrooms - and the hours, which do vary for some locations - is available on the NJ State Parks, Forests & Historic Sites Facebook page. For more information on the parks, visit their website. And Tips for Social Distancing While Visiting New Jersey;s State Parks and Natural Areas are available here.
Mask Up!
It's a controversial topic, to be sure. Health officials, as well as NJ and Warren County governments, are calling for people to wear masks when out in public. Some object to this instruction, but in our county parks we require visitors to have a mask with them and to wear it when social distancing is not possible.
This doesn’t mean you must wear it when alone on a trail. But you must wear a mask when encountering someone on a narrow path or other times where you might be within six feet of another who isn't in your household. Not only does this help to protect you, but it helps to protect others FROM you. People can be contagious without knowing they are ill.
Additionally, health officials recommend that you wash your hands - frequently - for 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water is not available. It's common sense, folks. Be kind to others, be safe, and enjoy your journeys outdoors.
