BHPC History Month - Veterans' Tribute and Tour

Saturday, May 26, 2018 -
1:00pm to 3:00pm

In honor of Memorial Day, Blairstown Historic Preservation Committee's final event of History Month 2018 is a tour and tribute to our Veterans who are interred at Cedar Ridge Cemetery. There are over three hundred Veterans who are buried here. As we tour the cemetery we will stop at the graves of Veterans from each war starting with the Civil War. We will tell of their service, sacrifice and special acknowledgements. It will be a tremendous honor to speak of these local heroes. One Veteran we will honor is Civil War survivor Hiram France, who fought in many battles including the Peninsular Campaign, Bull Run, and at South Mountain, Maryland where he lost his right arm due to sharpshooters gun. He returned to Blairstown and carried on work for many years before passing away at Hardwick Center on July 1, 1918.

Thank you in advance to David Shotwell of the Cedar Ridge Cemetery Association and Frank Lenkey of the Givens-Belet Post 258 for their help with information and arrangements for this tour.

Tour Timing and Departure:
Two tours will depart our BHPC tent at the west entrance (closest end to Tractor Supply Company). Starting times are 1:00 and 3:00. When arriving at the cemetery please head directly to our tent. Sign-in will begin at about 12:30 and 2:30. There are no reservations and tours are expected to run about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Parking:
Parking will be on Adams Road. This is a side road on the same side of Route 94 as the cemetery. It is adjacent to the west entrance. Please do not park inside the cemetery.

Terrain:
Please wear sturdy footwear and be prepared to walk about 1/2 - 3/4 of a mile. The cemetery is set on a hilly terrain and there will be some parts of the tour that will go off the cemetery roadways. Please watch your step as you walk between the gravestones.

Please, no pets allowed. For questions please call 908 362 6663 or email BlairstownHistoric@gmail.com.
