Canoe on the Canal for the Centennial of Alton Hester's 1916 Journey

Centennial of Alton Hester's 1916 Journey on the Morris Canal
Saturday, August 20, 2016 - 10:00am

The Warren County Morris Canal Committee is commemorating Alton Hester's historic 1916 trip along the Morris Canal with a slack-water journey open to all paddlers from Lock 4 West ("Elsie's") to Lock 5 West (Saxton Falls).

The canoe that Hester used in 1916, the Rimdeer, has been fully restored and will lead the flotilla. The canoe is on display at the Warren County History Museum at Bread Lock Park in Franklin Township.

Bring your canoe or kayak and join in the this journey! A trip of about 45 minutes is planned, leaving from the location of Lock 4 West, known as Elsie's, on Waterloo Road in Allamuchy Township, and proceeding to Saxton Falls. This section of the Morris Canal followed a dammed portion of the Musconetcong River.
