Centenary University Lecture Series: Raising Readers

Wednesday, May 30, 2018 - 7:00pm

Did you know that children “who are read to at least three times a week are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25 percent in reading than children read to less than three times a week?” It is of critical importance to instil a love of reading in children from birth. Families are first and foremost one of the most important influences on children’s literacy development. What can you do to create a family of readers? How can you add a third dimension to a story? Is it possible to make books more appealing than video games (or close)? In an entertaining, practical presentation, Lexis McCoy, Director of Graduate Reading and Assistant Professor of Education at Centenary University and her students, Jessica Ervey and Tyler Kozimor are going to share research on the importance of motivating children to read discussing how this motivation cycle impacts achievement. They will provide you with their Top Ten Recommendations for how to raise children who are motivated, lifelong readers. This workshop is intended for parents, grandparents, future-parents and caregivers of children birth to age 12.

The House of the Good Shepherd is proud to be the Presenting Sponsor for the Centenary Speaker Series, held each month at Rutherfurd Hall. The series brings experts in their field from Centenary College to speak one Wednesday evening each month. The program is approximately one hour followed by a Q &A session and includes refreshments
