One day. Three farms. Cattle. Grain. Produce. Wine. Tour three environmentally sustainable farms that provide healthy, local products on a special tour sponsored by the Musconetcong Watershed Association.
The tour begins 9:30am at Donaldson Farms in Hackettstown, NJ. Considered a “model farm” by the Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, Donaldson Farms uses methods that combine traditional farming practices with the latest innovations in agriculture.
Following a hayride with discussion of farm operations, and an opportunity shop at the farm stand, participants will caravan to the Lodge at River Valley in Asbury, NJ (pictured). A lunch featuring products from the farms visited will be provided, followed by a tour of the Cotton Cattle Company.
Owned and operated by fourth and fifth generation area residents, Cotton Cattle Company lies within the New Jersey Highlands Region, which is a landscape of great environmental importance. The farm exceeds organic and natural standards in order to provide its customers with meats that are free of antibiotics, artificial hormones and animal byproducts to provide a healthy and tasteful eating experience.
The final farm to be visited is Villa Milagro Vineyards in Phillipsburg, NJ. Guests will tour the organic wine grape vineyards and enjoy a wine-tasting. Villa Milagro participates in the River Valley Community Grains project which is bringing heritage grains to the Valley. The project encourages farmers to use regenerative agricultural methods and to help meet the growing demand for nutrient dense grains, local flour, “real bread,” and healthy cereals in the region. Tour participants will be able to sample bread that Bobolink Dairy & Bakehouse in Milford, NJ makes from these grains.
